Indian chai

It is one of the favorite drinks of people in India and is enjoyed by most as a drink all year round with their breakfast. But during monsoons, cold days and when sick, some extra cups are added as it would keep the body warm and keep the nasal cavity open. In principle, everyone uses the same ingredients, yet each family has its own recipe. This is due to the many combinations of herbs, the tea, amount of water, sugar and milk or its replacement.

! The Hindi word for chai is tea. So when we say chai tea, we are actually saying tea twice.

What do you need for 2 people?

  • 300ml water

  • 2 cm fresh ginger

  • 4 cardamom pods

  • 4 cloves

  • 1 cinnamon stick

  • 2 tsp sugar

  • 2 tsp black tea

  • 100 ml soy milk

What should you do?

1. Heat 300 ml of water in a saucepan over medium heat and add the spices (fresh ginger, cardamom, cloves and cane. Crush with a mortar, pestle and add to the water.

2. When the water is boiling, you can add the black tea and let it boil for 1 minute. Then add 2 teaspoons of sugar (possibly more or less to your taste).

3. Stir it well and add at least 100 ml of soy milk or another milk substitute. Bring the tea back to a boil, but be careful it can easily overflow.

4. As soon as the tea boils again, turn off the gas and use a sieve to pour the tea into 2 cups.
