Bread Pakora: A Quick and Delicious Appetizer for Any Gathering

Bread Pakora is one of Amit's grandmother's favorite snacks. They are basically sandwiches with a filling of spiced potatoes that are dipped in a chickpea batter and then fried. The result is a soft and crunchy snack with a tasty filling, which is best in combination with coriander chutney or tomato ketchup.

Duration: 45 minutes

Number of pieces: 10

What do you need?

For the filling:

  • 3 medium potatoes

  • 1 small red onion

  • A handful of fresh coriander

  • 0.5 tsp garam masala

  • 0.5 tsp coriander powder

  • 0.25 tsp chili powder

  • 0.25 tsp salt

For the batter:

  • 100 grams of chickpea flour

  • 1 tsp cumin seeds

  • 0.5 tsp turmeric

  • 0.25 tsp chili powder

  • 0.25 tsp salt

  • 150 ml of water

Other ingredients:

  • 5 slices of white bread

  • Sunflower oil (for frying)

What should you do?

1. Peel the potatoes and cook until tender. Also finely chop the red onion and fresh coriander (with stems).

2. You can then make the batter. Add the chickpea flour to a mixing bowl along with 1 tsp cumin seeds, 0.5 tsp turmeric, 0.25 tsp chili powder, and 0.25 tsp salt. Mix together. Then add 150 ml of water, so that you get a somewhat thicker pancake batter.

3. When the potatoes are cooked, mash them with a fork and add them to a mixing bowl. Also add the finely chopped onion, fresh coriander, and the following spices: 0.5 tsp garam masala, 0.5 tsp coriander powder, 0.25 tsp chili powder, and 0.25 tsp salt. Mix well.

4. Preheat a (wok) pan with sunflower oil. Cut each bun into 4 pieces (triangles).

5. Take about 2 tbsp of the potato mixture and spread it evenly over the bread. Cover with another piece of bread. Press lightly together and dip into the batter. Then gently slide it into the warm oil using a tablespoon. Fry until golden brown.

6. Repeat until all buns are fried. Enjoy!
